The user manual for HP LaserJet Pro M254dw printer consists of the Hardware setup, control panel setup, connection method setup, software download, software installation, mobile printing, wireless printing and HP ePrint setup.
1. 123 HP Hardware setup
The initial setup in the hardware setup is to remove the printer from the box. Remove the tapes, stickers and packing materials on the printer.
The inside of the printer has also packing materials covered, open and lift the scanner lid to remove the materials from the scanner bed. Close the scanner lid.
Make sure you have all the hardware materials from the box before discarding or recycling the box as the contents may vary by country/region. The list of items shipped in the box should be checked with the available items.
Before installing the cartridges, load the input tray. The paper input tray should be pulled out. The paper width and length guides should be slide to the outermost positions. Extend the front and rear of the tray to insert the legal-size paper.
The paper should be loaded in the input tray with the print side up. Slide the paper forward until it stops and slide the paper width guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.
The paper input tray should not be overloaded. Check whether the stack of paper fits within the tray and it is not higher than the top of the guides. The paper tray should be inserted back into the input tray. Install the ink cartridges after inserting the paper input tray.
3. 123 HP Connection method setup
You can choose USB connection or wireless connection or wired connection. Follow the instructions given below to select the connection method type on your operating system either Windows or Mac operating systems.
USB connection
In your Windows, except the versions 8, 8.1 or RT, the USB cable should not be connected before installing the software. Disconnect the USB cable, if you have already connected one. After finishing the connection setup, continue with the software download and installation setup. Select the option “Directly connect this computer using a USB cable” during the software installation.
In your Mac OS, before installing the printer software, connect the USB cable from the computer to the printer. Select the option “Directly connect this computer using a USB cable” during the software installation.
Wireless connection
Pres the Wireless button on the control panel to connect the printer on a wireless network (Wi-Fi network). Touch Wireless Menu → Wireless Setup Wizard.
The SSID list will be displayed, select your network name. If your network name is not listed, type the SSID or network name manually.
Enter the WEP or WPA passphrase using the keyboard and click OK button. The printer will establish a network connection.
Touch the Network button on the control panel. If the network connection is established, an IP address will be listed on the control panel. If not, try again after a few minutes. The IP address should be noted for the use during software installation.
Continue with the software download and installation to print from a computer or continue with the mobile printing solution to print from a phone or tablet.
Software Download
The software download can be done using the HP Easy Start or using the printer CD or using the support website.
Click Download after visiting the 123.hp.com/laserjet. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen and prompt to save to file to the computer. Execute the software file that you saved and continue with Software installation.
If you download using the support website, go to www.hp.com/support. Select software and drivers. Download the printer software depending on your model number and operating system. Click the .exe or .zip files to launch the installation file.
Use the installation CD that comes with the printer to install the software for Windows. The installer file on the CD includes a link to download the files from the web.
If you use OS X, the installer file on the CD includes a link to download the files from the web. Insert the installation CD into the computer and continue with the software installation.
Wired network connection
The network cable should be connected to the printer. The printer will acquire a network address after a few minutes.
Touch the Network button on the printer control panel. If the network connection is established, an IP address will be listed on the control panel. If not, try again after a few minutes.
The IP address should be noted for the use during software installation. Continue with the software download and installation to print from a computer or continue with the mobile printing solution to print from a phone or tablet.
123 HP Software Installation
For Windows
The installation CD should be inserted into the computer to launch the software installation. The language of the operating system is detected by the software installer. The installer program does not start after 30 seconds, then browse the CD drive on the computer and launch the file named SETUP.EXE.
The software selection screen displays. The recommended software installation includes the printer driver and software for all available printer features.
Click Customizable Software selections link to customize the software installed. Click the Next button when the setup is complete. Follow the instruction that appear on the screen to install the software. Select a connection type when prompted. You can connect directly to the computer using a USB cable or connect through a network.
For OS X Full solution
The software you downloaded from the web should be launched. The language of the operating system is detectable by the software installer. The main menu of the installation program is displayed in the same language.
Some of the details in the Installation Options screens are for a standard installation, click Install button now or click the Customize button for a custom installation. Select the components that should be installed on the screen that opens and click Install button.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the software. To configure printer options, use the HP Utility Setup Assistant at the end of the software installation process.
3. 123 HP Mobile printing setup
Wireless network connection
You should connect the device to the same wireless network to print from a phone or tablet. Open the item to print on your Apple iOS devices and select the Action icon. Select the Print option, select the printer and select Print.
On your new Android devices with 4.4 or newer versions, open the file you want to print and select the Menu button. Select Print, select the printer and select Print. On your old Android devices with 4.3 or older versions, download the HP ePrint app from the Google Play store.
You need to install the HP Print Service plugin app from the Google Play Store for some devices. On your Windows Phone, download the HP AiO Remote app from the Windows Store.
Wi-Fi Direct connection
Using the Wi-Fi direct, you can easily connect to the printer and wireless mobile device directly without the help of any networks.
To enable the Wi-Fi direct, touch the Wireless button on the control panel and touch Wireless Direct.
Click On/Off and click ON. Touch Security and touch On for secure printing. Note the pass phrase that displays. Touch Security → Off to allow unsecured printing.
4. 123 HP ePrint setup
HP ePrint setup helps you to send documents to the printer which you wish to print from anywhere by sending them as an email attachment to the printer’s email address.
You need a printer connected to a wired or wireless network with an active internet connection. HP Web Services must be enabled on the printer and the printer must be registered with HP connected account.
To enable the web services you can use any one of the following methods.
On 2-line control panel, press the OK button. Open the Network Setup menu to select the Show IP Address to view the IP Address of the printer.
You can also open the web browser and in the address line, enter the IP address or host name correctly as it is displayed on the printer control panel. Click the Enter Key to open the EWS.
